Summer is definitely on the way out and Autumn is knocking on the door! We don’t know about where you are in the country/world but down here in the Southwest of England, the sun is still fighting through some days, meaning some days we can still go out without coats and with sunglasses – while others, it is absolutely winter coats and brollies at the ready!
Season changes can really impact mood, for lots of reasons. Different people are drawn to different seasons, whether it is the hope and beauty of spring, the warmth and long bright days of summer, the colours of autumn, or the cosy nights in winter.
We like autumn, love the colours, we love watching nature just shed this year and brace for winter, knowing that they will be ready to start afresh in the spring. We marvel at trees ability to “shake off” a year so easily, with the certainty that they can start over.
There is something cathartic in that, something we can potentially learn from. Trees don’t hold on to everything. Imagine if they held all their fruit and leaves forever, unwilling to let anything go, just in case something new never came along. Things would rot, they would become ugly and fade.
How similar in our own lives at times? We can be reluctant to “let go” of some things that no longer serve us, for fear that nothing will replace it, or that somehow, we still need them. And yet, they are suffocating us, preventing our growth and stopping new more beautiful things from flourishing in our lives.
Now, don’t get us wrong, because the phrase “let go” gets thrown around a lot, and it can mean different things to different people. What we are referring to here is letting go of things that are weighing you down and no longer adding to your life – relationships, habits, ways of thinking, belongings that aren’t needed, those types of things. We are not really talking about letting go of memories or losses, because, let’s be honest, that is far more complicated and layered. (We might even blog again about what “letting go” when it comes to loss, really means – watch this space!)
What we are saying is that perhaps we can take lessons from nature, and take a look at what we can “shed.” For us, we are both currently working through sorting stuff! The local refuse centre is becoming a familiar place, as we are filtering through things and reevaluating what we want in our lives and what is just “stuff” that no longer serves us. It is cleansing, and liberating to let go of things, giving ourselves room to breathe more somehow.
It is also the best time of year, in our humble opinion, to get out and observe nature. The huge variety in the colours of the leaves is almost showing off, begging to be admired! A walk in Autumn is full of sights, colours, sounds, leaves crunching, and sounds, birds still very present. It is a really good time to get outside and ground yourself in nature, are you going to take some time to do that?
So how about you? What can this season show you? Will it be time to look at your ife and your world, evaluate whether there needs to be any changes? Will it be time for you to take the opportunity to get out in to nature and notice, look at the colours, the changes that are happening in the weeks ahead?
